Want to prepare your child for the “real world”?

Forget about getting tough with them.

(read my article Why You Should Never Get Tough With Your Kids for more on that)

Instead of getting mean and being harsh with children, help them develop a positive, confident inner dialogue within themselves.

The reason why this is most effective, is because when they are faced with challenges, frustrations and disappointments, they will have the strength, optimism and conviction to move forward, instead of complaining, judging, blaming and giving up.

How do you help them develop a positive inner dialogue?

By talking to them cooperatively, with appreciation, encouragement and respect, instead of talking down to them, complaining, judging and blaming them and others about the things you don’t like.

Most of have moments where we think and speak negatively. That’s ok. When it happens, make a correction in your own thinking, apologize if you let it get the best of you, and move on.

It’s important to not dwell in negativity.

Instead, focus on making most of your conversation and dialogue with your children positive and optimistic, and to show that you are always confident and trusting of them.

The mental patterns you are helping to shape and to form in your child’s mind will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Of course you aren’t the only factor, but you are the most important, especially during their younger years.

If talking in positive and encouraging ways is challenging or painful for you, that is an area for you to explore and work on changing. You may find there is a deep inner pain or wound going back to your own childhood that needs some resolution.

Nobody is perfect, but we can all try to do our best.

Looking for encouraging things you can say to develop that positive inner dialogue within your child?

Here are some phrases you can say at any time, in any situation.

I love you.
I appreciate you.
I’m proud of you.
I love when we’re together.
You’re so special to me.
I know you can do it.
You always do your best.
I support you.
I have confidence in you.
You can do anything you set your mind to.
I love being with you.
You always amaze me.
I’m really impressed.
I understand.
You mean the world to me.
You’re a great kid.
I’m always learning something from you.
I value our time together.
We make a great team.
I hear you.
I see you.
You can tell me anything.
I’m so glad you’re in my life.
You make the world a better place.
I trust you.
I value your opinion.
You have such a loving heart.
I miss you when we’re not together.

Need more?

Just imagine what you would want to hear your parents say to you. Now go and say those things to your kids.

And that is to best prepare kids for the challenges and disappointments in life.
